Safety information

The information below is for your safety on Cliffe Bonfire night 2025.

Please

  • Buy your fire site tickets in advance.
  • Society members may want to protect clothing with flame retardant spray. The Stitchery, at Riverside has a stock available. Spray ahead – three days in advance.
  • Wear appropriate clothing. It may rain and you will walk for a long distance so wear good shoes.
  • Bring cash for drinks and food from the various vendors.
  • Be aware of your own health. Bonfire processions are loud, bright, have flashing lights and create much smoke and fumes. Bring medication if you use it and we strongly advise ear plugs. Outdoor on Cliffe High Street have a stock. If you feel unwell on the night, call for help and find first aid.
  • Stay well back from the procession to avoid minor burns.
  • Follow advice from Marshalls and leave an area if asked to do so.
  • Make your way through crowds patiently and courteously.
  • Contribute liberally to the collection boxes.

Please do not

  • Don’t bring any animals. It is too busy, noisy and crowded. They will be trampled and terrified.
  • Don’t bring young children requiring prams or buggies. At seated height they are more at risk from street fireworks and navigating crowds is too difficult.
  • Don’t pick up torches. Even a burnt-out torch can be hot. They will be collected by the torch runners.
  • Don’t bring your own fireworks (including rookies) or flares. You risk hurting yourself or others and risk being detained and fined by the very vigilant police.
  • Don’t attempt to cross the road or the procession route.
  • Don’t bring a car into Lewes. There is no parking in the immediate area. Plan your journey on public transport in advance.
  • Don’t purchase plastic carnival toys from the unlicensed street vendors. Their light sabres and headdresses are suited to festivals and fairs but not Bonfire and they contribute nothing to the Societies or their chosen charities.
